  • Villas and Hikes - South Africa

I was lucky enough to get a free ticket ($150!) for a SAS trip on the first day in South Africa. And even better was that Alanna and Chelsea were on it too. We first went to Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve and walked around while referencing the bird sheets provided to us. After an amazing seafood lunch, we headed to the famous Boulder Beach and saw the penguins.

In my opinion they looked a little worse for the wear but I'm glad we stopped at the famous beach. Next up was Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.

Chels, Alanna, Kelly, Mike and I walked to the top of the lookout and it was so amazing.

On our way out of the reserve we saw ostriches and their little fluffy babies. We got back on the bus and drove about an hour and half back to the ship. Once back, we showered and got ready to go to a villa we had rented so we could see Kyra, a girl I had played lacrosse with for many years. She was studying abroad in South Africa along with many of her Dartmouth classmates! We took a taxi there and found the most ridiculous villa ever. There were two pools, two hot tubs, a zen garden and a ton of rooms. That night we enjoyed some of the bars on Long Street.

The next morning we were hanging out in the master bedroom when we got the news...eviction! I guess we were making too much noise (yes) and there were a lot of damages. So, we tried to get everyone up and out which took a while. Kyra drove us (Bernie, Danny, Tori, Nikkie and me) to the waterfront and we got breakfast at Mugg and Bean.

I lost the group as everyone was getting ready to hike Table Mountain but was lucky to find Aria and Will who were going to hike Lions Head instead. The three of us took a taxi there and began the pretty tough hour and fifteen minute hike to the top.

We took picture breaks along the way because...as you can see...the view was breathtaking.

On our way down, we saw a woman lying down who couldn't go up and farther because she didn't like the heights. We helped her all the way down and she ended up offering us a ride back to the ship!

Aria and I grabbed our computers on the ship and went to Mugg and Bean to use the free 30 minutes internet to upload some pictures for our families back home. Not long after, we headed back to the ship to prepare for another adventure in South Africa.
