  • Eating and Drinking in Portland ME: COVID-19

The second stop on our trip was Portland, Maine. Sam and I were ready for the less strenuous portion of our vacation after spending the first six days in Acadia National Park hiking. The food at Acadia (a.k.a. Bar Harbor) had its ups and downs. But Portland was an entirely different story. It's a city that's purely known for eating and drinking, and we unfortunately didn't have enough stomach space to try them all. Here were our stops during our COVID-19 Portland trip and what we thought of each of them!

    Duckfat

I start here because it's an absolute must. Sam was beyond thrilled about this one, and still reminisces about it every so often. We each tried a panini and they were stellar, but the claim to fame for this spot are the Belgian fries fried in, you guessed it, duck fat! And you get to pick dipping sauces, which is the epitome of a good restaurant in my mind.

    Eventide

This place was recommended by everyone I talked to before our trip. So of course we had to try it out. It's more of a tapas-style menu and oftentimes has an extremely long wait. We put our name in and walked around for about an hour before it was ready. The food was delicious - wow that lobster roll. It was on a bun and much smaller than I would've liked, but damn it was good.

    The Holy Donut

This is a great breakfast stop, although I've recently heard that the one in downtown Portland was closed. But luckily there is another Holy Donut, and that's the one we went to. They are delicious donuts that are made, surprisingly, out of potatoes. They have quite the variety!

    Shipyard Brewing Company

We made a stop here instead of Allagash because Allagash (our favorite) was unfortunately closed for tastings. This one is right downtown close to Duckfat. We weren't crazy about the beers, a lot seemed to be the base with a fruity flavor added, but it was a good stop on our walking food and drink tour.

    Central Provisions

This one is highly rated online, so we were extremely pleased to get a table with no wait. We quickly realized that this wasn't going to be a full meal. It was good - quirky, for sure - but not a place I would go if I'm really hungry. We ordered a few items and got a beer each. It's possible we went while they had a mini menu, but I'm not entirely sure.

    Gritty McDuff's Brew Pub

We came here right after Central Provisions for our second dinner. This place had a very lived-in vibe and offered a number of different bar food options with plenty of beers to choose from.

    Mount Desert Island Ice Cream

There are many ice cream places to choose from, and this is the one we went with. I enjoyed my cookies and cream, but I'm also not an ice cream expert by any stretch of the imagination.

    Local 188

We tried going to Hot Suppa for breakfast due to it's amazing reviews. unfortunately the wait was going to be just too long, so we improvised. And luckily our improvisation turned out spectacular. Although our order did take some time to prepare, it was worth it. I greatly enjoyed my biscuits and gravy with sausage. This one is not directly downtown and was closer to our hotel. There were plenty of places around here for breakfast.

    Lighthouses

No, this isn't a restaurant. Yes, it did seem to be the only thing to do in Portland other than eating and drinking. Sam wasn't totally thrilled with this excursion, but I figured we needed to see the lighthouses since we were in Portland. There were two, and I can understand why Sam wasn't super keen. But the second one we went to was in a lovely park with plenty of outdoor space for activities.

    Frank Pepe's Pizza

Fine, this one isn't in Portland, but it was on our way home. This place is famous for pizza in my home state of Connecticut. We enjoyed our cheese pie in a parking lot during our seven hour drive home.

And that's sadly the end of our COVID-vacation. We had a lovely time and felt safe during our trip due to Maine's tight COVID-19 restrictions. Luckily it allowed us to enjoy more or less a "normal" (as normal as it can get) experience in the lovely state. Until next time, and there will definitely be one!
