  • Spring Break: Miami

If it were just me, I would've arrived with a little over an hour to spare before my flight took off. But I was with my saucy crew (Anne, Susan, Anthony and Joe) and they thought I was reckless. So, we arrived about two hours prior and dabbled in some Chick-Fil-A, Pinkberry and a beer before taking off for Miami.

We stayed at Gale South Beach, and our room was small but nice...only snaffu was the shower situation. It was open to the room which posed a problem for some friends staying together, but we made it work!

Our first and only stop for the night was Yardbird, a trendy southern restaurant not too far from our hotel. We ordered a drink each, a few starters and a few chicken and waffles. The plan was to go out for a bit...but the travel and food sent us straight to sleep.

We only had one full day in Miami before our drive down to Key West and we tried to make the most of it. Joe and I got a quick run in on the beach before lounging by the pool with Anne and Susan.

Once Anthony ventured up, we headed across the street to The Social Club and had some good eats.

Our afternoon was packed and started off with a visit to the Perez Art Museum. While we did go into the museum (with a student discount), I found the outside of the building to be more impressive. It is definitely a must see when in Miami.

We made a somewhat silly decision to walk to our next stop, J Wakefield Brewing. Although not a long walk, it wasn't along the most welcoming of streets but did feature street murals along the way. After a round of beers (I chose a sour), we made our way to the Wynwood Walls, a really cool area for murals made my artists around the globe.

The next stop on our brewery tour was Wynwood Brewing Company and most of us got the White Wizard, a witbier.

Concrete Beach Brewery was our last brewery stop and it was the crowd favorite. My friend from college, Shane, joined us after he left work and we played a round of Cards Against Humanity while enjoying some delicious beer before our final destination in the area, Kyu.

A modern Asian-style eatery, Kyu did not disappoint. We had a variety of dishes and I spent a lot of the time catching up with Shane. After a delicious meal, we said bye to Shane and jumped in our Uber to get back to the hotel.

Anne, Susan and I attempted to go out. We got dressed and made our way to a hostel which featured a popular destination called The Broken Shaker. After attempting to get a drink at the crowded, hipster bar, we realized that there was no seating available. It was just one of those nights where we wanted to sit....so instead we went home and grabbed a mojito at the swanky bar in our hotel before walking a few doors down to bed.

The next morning we lounged by the pool before heading to brunch with Joe's aunt and cousin at Front Porch Cafe. They suggested we start off breakfast right - with a round of mimosas!

Our Miami portion of Spring Break had come to an end. Susan picked up our rental car and we packed into our Ford Explorer with our next destination in mind....Key West!
